A question was recently asked on Reddit that
has stirred up a lot of dirt towards the hotel industry. The forum
posed questions asking hotel staff to reveal secrets that normally
wouldn’t be shared. Below are some of the answers we’ve compiled
together here at Viral Quake.
1. Check your sheets.
Your mattress cover and sheet are usually the only things that get
washed. You’d be surprised to know many times you’ve probably slept on
sheets that haven’t been washed, but instead sprayed with a fabric
freshener.
2. Don’t use the duvet cover as a blanket.
If it looks clean and not wrinkled then it stays without being
washed. Just to clear this up, duvets are NOT meant to be slept on.
3. Get your bathtub cleaned.
Housekeeping will sometimes wash your bathroom toilet in your
bathtub. This saves them time, energy, and from having to take a trip
downstairs to get a new one.
4. Ask for new sheets and pillows.
Housekeeping will sometimes skip on changing out your bed sheets in order to save time.
5. Don’t drink from the faucet.
The same cleaner that is used to wipe down the windows, is sometimes
the same cleaner used to clean everything else in the room. Ever tasted
lemon when drinking from the bathroom sink? That’s from the Lysol spray
used to clean off the counters, tables, and anything else they can
spray it on.
6. Put away your belongings.
Housekeeping will ALWAYS show up to clean your room throughout the
day, unless you personally tell them otherwise. You’d be shocked to hear
how much is stolen each year due to housekeeping. Mind you, not all
housekeepers play this way.
7. Don’t drink from the glassware.
Glass cups are rarely cleaned. Usually glassware is just rinsed in
the bathroom sink, only to be put back where they came from. Sounds like
a good way to get Mono to me.
8. Bed bugs are on the rise!
Before you book a room, check out the Bed Bug Registry.
This free service keeps track of bed bug incidents at all different
kinds of locations, including hotels. The reports are dated, and in some
cases feature responses and updates from hotel staff. So, you can judge
for yourself whether the problem has been dealt with appropriately. (source)
9. The remote control almost never gets cleaned.
According to the Reddit hotel worker, the remote almost never gets cleaned. (Did you hear that? The remote NEVER gets cleaned. (source)
10. Be careful where you sit.
Apparently plenty of people sit on hotel furniture naked. Yes… NAKED. (Let’s hope Prince Harry’s suite was thoroughly cleaned.) (source)
11. Jacuzzi tub
All sorts of nasty stuff gets clogged in the jets — and winds up in
your bath water when you turn them on. Be careful when using the jacuzzi
tub. Always check your room before claiming it as yours. (source)
